Transforming a Historic Site into a Modern Destination

2WR Architects partnered with multiple owners to lead the mixed-use redevelopment of City Mills Columbus Georgia. Located on the east bank of the Chattahoochee River, this historic site now serves as a gateway connecting Bibb Village to Uptown Columbus. The project focused on balancing preservation with modern functionality while ensuring flexibility for future growth.

Our team conducted a comprehensive site evaluation to explore adaptive reuse strategies. Notably, we worked closely with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) to align design goals with historic preservation requirements. Using BIM modeling, we developed multiple concepts that allowed owners and stakeholders to agree on aesthetics, cost, and function. Consequently, this streamlined the decision-making process.

A Model for Future Redevelopment

This mixed-use redevelopment revitalized City Mills Columbus Georgia, blending historic character with contemporary urban living. Moreover, the project supports local businesses, residents, and visitors, boosting community engagement and economic growth.

2WR’s work demonstrates how thoughtful redevelopment can preserve history while fostering modern, adaptable spaces. Ultimately, City Mills Columbus Georgia stands as a prime example of mixed-use redevelopment, showing how historic sites can thrive in today’s urban landscape.
